Our Grievances
We in the Third Estate have many grievances against our king. They include the specific grievances from us, our poor harvests, the burden of debt, and the failure of reforms. Poor harvests sent our food prices soaring, making it difficult for the poor to buy food. The court spent lavishly upon themselves, sending us into debt. To try to get us out of debt, King Louis XVI hired a financial consultant, but ended up firing him.
Due to the failed attempts of reform, our king called upon the Estates General to convene in an attempt to avoid total bankruptcy, and a change in government. The problem with the Estates General was that each estate was given one vote and the richer two always voted against the poorer third estate. Because of this, the delegates of the Third Estate separated from the Estate General to form the National Assembly. Soon afterwards, representatives from the other two began to join the National Assembly.
